MaryAnn Gorka executes her work using a unique, self taught "acrylic

Check out the flyer and don't miss Friday the 13th at Beleza. Supporting Pittsburgh artists becomes more crucial in times like this.

We take art for granted but if we don't support new work from artists there's no guarantee it will keep coming.

Commentary/News: Arts need support during hard times
Wednesday, February 18, 2009
By Mary Thomas, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

"The truth is I must have a change of some sort, or die," Abraham Lincoln said when criticized for attending opera while the Civil War raged.

The quote, cited during a National Public Radio report on the 16th president's musical preferences, exemplifies the vital role the arts play to audiences across the human spectrum -- from presidents agonizing within impenetrable shadow to children dancing on sunlit lawns. The arts reflect upon and interpret the human condition, illuminating as they entertain, challenging as they soothe, commiserating while inspiring. Without much fanfare for their contributions in this area, the arts provide a significant social safety valve in our lives.

ARTISTS USING UNEXPECTED MEDIA COMBINATIONS
FEATURED at LUKE & ELOY GALLERY’S “DOUBLE VISION”

February 9, 2009, Pittsburgh, PA – 13 Artists who express themselves in differing art and craft forms, sometimes combined in one work, are featured in Luke & Eloy Gallery’s new exhibit “Double Vision.” Artists Dan Buchanan, Susan Constanse, Kat Cole, John Dorinsky, Lindsay Huff, Ji-Hye Kim, Lilianne Milgrom, Shannon Rankin, Ben Roosevelt, Damia Smith, Amanda Stark, Paula Sweet, and James Thurman are represented in the exhibit that runs from March 7 to April 18, 2009. Luke & Eloy Gallery is located at 5169 Butler Street in Lawrenceville. Opening Reception is Saturday, March 7, 2009 from 11am to 3pm. Regular gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday 11am to 2pm, Saturdays 11am to 5pm. For more information visit www.lukeandeloy.ning.com or call 412-784-1919.
Gallery Director Brigitte Martin’s goal was to present 2 or more works that show the unusual media combinations being used by each artist. The featured artists work in disparate media combinations such as porcelain and video, embroidery and drawing, sound and sculpture, ink and raku pottery, metal and glass, and aluminum and paper.
Pittsburgh artist Dan Buchanan, a CMU fine arts graduate who also has a culinary background, presents his full-sized sugar-cast machine guns in a work entitled “Arsenal.” Artist Ji-Hye Kim presents wearable art combining traditional Korean painting and acrylic. Amanda Stark’s mysterious sculptures of hand-blown glass, wire and other media seem to be contraptions from a 19th century science lab. Art Jeweler James Thurman presents both a “reclaimed handgun” sculpture and a necklace of pearls combined with a woman’s shoe and a selection of high heels.
Luke & Eloy Gallery features regular exhibits of fine art and craft, including painting, sculpture, and other media. Specializing in fine art jewelry, Luke & Eloy presents work by noted designers of art jewelry, including Gallery Director Brigitte Martin who is a goldsmith and fine art jeweler.

Collect them all!Editor Jerome Crooks says, “The only qualification for inclusion in the book was that the writer be from, or spent time, in Pittsburgh. I didn't expect there to be any similarities beyond a shared location, or the mention of a local personality, or event. What I found combing through the submissions was a shared set of themes. The tone was similar. Unromantic and unflinching, writer after writer confessed, faced their fears, and challenged themselves creatively. They entertain the entire time.”

Admission to the book release and reading is free. For those arriving for the Dance Party after 10:30 pm there will be a $2 door charge. Coatlicue 2 will retail for $10.

As the first step in a larger project aimed at making our region a better place for artists of all disciplines to live and work, the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council is investigating the different ways that local organizations serve individual artists and compiling a list of the resources and services that artists feel are needed most. By taking a few minutes to answer a six (6) question survey, both artists and the organizations who serve them will assist us in determining where our region is succeeding in meeting the needs of artists and where we are not. This analysis will help to guide future efforts and initiatives aimed at eliminating duplications in services, and meeting the needs of local artists. Please encourage as many of your peer organizations and local artists as possible to participate in this data collection by completing the appropriate survey by February 26th, 2009. If you have any questions about this survey, please contact Ryan Freytag, Manager of Cultural Policy and Research, at rfreytag@pittsburghartscouncil.org or 412.391.2060 x232.

There's also a survey for organizations too.

Onorato orders halt to removal of artworks
Monday, February 16, 2009
By Mark Belko, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
"The airport is a wake-up call for all of us to preserve the great artwork that exists in this county," the county executive said.
Mr. Onorato said the proposed review committee would include representatives from local arts groups and architectural firms. While the panel would review requests to remove artwork from public facilities, Mr. Onorato made it clear that, as he sees it, such requests would be granted only in rare instances.
"You start with the assumption that the artwork stays. You've got to meet the burden of removal. The idea is to preserve artwork," he said.
