Correction: There is no Nov 5 2008 Binding Party

Weekly Binding Parties at Encyclopedia Destructica

Encyclopedia Destructica creates art-zines (magazines with book aesthetics) inspired by the need to explore and export contemporary arts/culture in a way that’s accessible and easy to engage in, providing a forum for a primordial dialogue between artists.
To produce each issue, Encyclopedia Destructica holds weekly binding parties, gatherings where artists, friends, & the interested general public come to the Destructica studios and work on the production of the zines. Created and distributed in a DIY fashion, Encyclopedia Destructica promotes this attitude as well as providing support and resources for local artists to create their own book/zine projects. Encyclopedia Destructica is interested in community and dialogue throughout the creative process with the artists and editors in the process of creating an issue, the artwork within the pages of an issue, artists and participants as they work on production in binding sessions, and the viewer engaging the issue and the artwork within.
Encyclopedia Destructica holds almost weekly binding parties on Wednesday evenings. Binding parties are open to the public, are are gatherings where we work on the production of Destructica's zines and books. Email zine@encyclopediadestructica.com to join our binding party email list.

I've been a fan and follower of This Is Happening for several years and recommend you create a profile and specify your event preferences so you can receive a rundown on what's going on in Pittsburgh. It's the most comprehensive and customizable resource for Pittsburgh events I know of. I don't recommend going hog wild with the event preferences as you'll end up with a seemingly endless list ( cause there's like a lot goin and stuff).

Wednesday October 29, 2008:

Altered Meanings: Featuring works by Cat Chow & Jesse McLeanReceptions: Wednesday, October 29 at 7:00 p.m

Thursday October 30, 2008:

Unearthed at the Ice House Unearthed features artwork crafted from trees felled in Allegheny Cemetery.

Friday October 31 2008:

Chick with Dicks: Bad Girls on Bikes doing Bad Things, a 60’s B-movie parody with a twist. Chicks is set in and around Three Mile Island, Pennsylvania’s very own nuclear power plant. The irreverently absurd plot centers around Vespa de Amore, a prom queen runner-up who accidentally kills her sex-shy boyfriend and ends up on the road with an all-girl biker gang named Satan’s Cherries. This wild ride features plenty of go-go dancing, hair pulling, mud wrestling, and kung fu fighting as these good-girls-gone-bad get even worse!

moxie DaDA welcomes back Robert D. Huckestein for a special exhibition examining the motives of world leaders, past and present. The topically themed "Politics and Other Vices" premiers this Saturday, November 1, 2008. The reception will be held the same day, from 6:00-9:00pm.
No matter what side of the fence you are on, you will find Mr. Huckestein's realist paintings to be fascinating. This is the culmination of a two year effort, and has been scheduled since the beginning to coincide with the transition that our nation is about to undertake."The paintings I have done for this show express my contempt for people that will do whatever they can to maintain their power over others. Power for the sake of power is a vice, which we must protect ourselves against."

Hello Gist Street,

Fall is here. There's soup on the stove, a pumpkin on the front porch, and a sweater on the dog. It's time to take a break from looking at all those leaves and head on over to James Simon's Sculpture Studio on Friday, November 7th. We're featuring the amazing poet Miriam Levine and the fantastic fiction writer Ellen Litman.

Doors open at 7:15; readings begin at 8:00. It's $5. There's a raffle, where you might win books (which will also be for sale), eggs, a drawing by John Fleenor, or rumor has it there might be something "knitted."

BYOB. BYOB. Also, if you have any extra Halloween candy sitting around. We can certainly clean that up for you. Post-election celebratory enthusiasm? We'll take that as well.

That's 305 Gist Street, Uptown, 3rd floor. http://www.giststreet.org/ for bios and directions. Gist Street is also now a "group" on Facebook. If you know what that means, you know what to do.

Hope to see you there!

Sherrie
